A Day on the Water – Building Confidence Through New Experiences

At Accuro, collaboration with partners whose values align with ours helps us offer new opportunities and experiences that we may not be able to provide alone. Our recent sailing day with the Pioneer Sailing Trust in Brightlingsea is a wonderful example of what can happen when two organisations come together to create positive experiences.
Accuro member Izzy joined the sailing day and shares her experience.
“I was very curious about the day, especially where we were going and what this whole sailing day was going to be like and the type of boat we were going to be on.
When we got there the guys at Pioneer explained the history of the boat, and that Pioneer is the last one of it’s kind. When we saw the boat we thought WOW, that’s massive and really cool! We were given a sailing lesson and also a history lesson as well.
I’ve been on a little sailboat before on a school trip but nothing like Pioneer. On Pioneer we got to put up the main sail on the mast, it took 6 of us swapping around and working together. Everything required teamwork. We learnt how to move the boat as well and how to follow the buoys and steer the boat properly.
For me the best part of the day was steering the boat and I never thought I would be able to hoist the mast. I really surprised myself. I felt free out on the water, you are away from everything and it’s peaceful and really fun.”
Sailing is very different from Izzy’s usual activities, and she felt the opportunity was only possible through Accuro.
“The day has made me think I want to try some new things, and everyone who went on the trip said they would really like to do it again.”
Izzy’s Mum, Jill, added: “From the point of view of a Mum, it is wonderful to see Izzy try new things and activities that are independent from me. I love seeing Izzy meeting new people and making connections with Accuro, I know she is safe and sound whilst she is doing it. It’s very reassuring.”
